Youth Rally Condemned

Read this article a couple days ago. There was a big Christian youth rally in San Francisco and here's how the city government responded:

Earlier this week, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution condemning the "act of provocation"  by what it termed an "anti-gay," "anti-choice" organization that aimed to "negatively influence the politics of America's most tolerant and progressive city."

The article was from a San Francisco paper, so it's bias might be evident. I found it interesting that they made a point of calling the rally militaristic.

Military metaphors abound in Luce's descriptions of the struggle. He tells young people of how "an enemy has launched a brutal attack on them." At a pre-Battle Cry rally Friday afternoon on the steps of City Hall, Luce told his mostly teenage audience that "terrorists of a different kind" -- advertisers -- were targeting them and that they were "caught in the middle of the battle."

Launch!

Yesterday was the Book Launch party thrown by my family. We had a great time and I even managed to read the first chapter of the book in front of the group without hurling. I didn't have any trouble with the question and answer period, but there is something truly heinous about having to read my work aloud. I don't know quite what the difference is, but once the reading part was over I had a good time. My family and friends really went all out. There were cut-out paper dolls matching the cover, table decorations, balloons, lots of food -- it was a real party. Now if all attending will go out and tell five of their friends, maybe we'll get some word of mouth going. :)

Profane Personalized Plates

So I thought for a lark I'd get personalized plates for my ever-reliable Honda this year...and what could be better than using my favorite Bible verse that inspired the website: as4me. Unfortunately, I just got a letter back from the DMV saying my plate choice was rejected due to a profane or derogatory alternate meaning. I feel like I need to call them and explain my less-than-profane idea -- I'm afraid I've been listed in some big, bad federal database as a perv.

The bio that got cut

Just for fun, here's the un-publisher-snipped bio I wrote for the book. My parents and I came up with it when we went out to Fiesta Guadalajara for a celebratory dinner the night I sent off the final edited copy to the publisher. I was pretty excited because my life sounds fairly interesting when you just list one cool thing a year. :p

Jodi Cowles caught the travel bug when her parents took her on her first international flight at six months of age. Since then she’s been in over 30 countries. Along the way she’s gotten locked out of her cabin on an all night train to Kiev, helped deliver a baby in Indonesia, taught English in South Korea, gone spelunking in Guam, hiked the Golan Heights and laid bricks in Zimbabwe. Her interest in politics stems from hunting Easter eggs on the south lawn of the White House as a child. For her 30th birthday she ran the LA Marathon and promised to get serious about publishing. Jodi resides in Boise, Idaho and this is her first novel.

Work...Prison

For the last week and a half I was down in California on a business trip. It wasn't supposed to be that long -- originally it was just a week, but things happened and I had to stay on. I'm not sure if God is trying to tell me something or if it's my own impatience and/or irresponsibility, but I felt like I was in a jailcell, constantly banging my head trying to get out. I want so much to be FREE. FREE to really shepherd the online training process this year. FREE to lead projects that come up on the spur of the moment. FREE to take a month and go secret myself away on one of these fabulous freighters I've been reading about so I can make a good start on my second book.

Lord, grant me patience. For the millionth time I'm reminded that Your timing is not mine.
