The International Christian Retail Show.
This week I'll be blogging from the Georgia World Conference Center in Atlanta...specifically from a parking lot where I'm boondocking. For those of you not familiar with RVing lingo, that means I'm paying good money to sit on a slab of concrete with no hookups. I thought it'd be good experience to try to sleep in a sauna so I'll be totally prepared for my trip to Senegal this fall where the locals wear long sleeve shirts and jackets when the temperature falls all the way down to 100. ;)
I just walked back from the schwank dinner put on by my publisher for authors they invited to the show. We had a little speech from a PR company which made me feel slightly better about all the marketing hassles I've experienced -- you're supposed to PAY someone to experience those hassles for you...that was my mistake. :p
While I chomped down top sirloin and mashed potatoes one of the distributor gurus gave a chat about their process, then the publisher told us a little bit about what we should be trying to do this week. I can sum it up in four words: gladhand, smile and look pretty...
I kid. But we are supposed to take shifts at the booth and strike up conversations with random passersby. Be friendly, etc., etc. I'll also take a few spins around the expo and see if my new marketing t-shirt was worth 20 bucks. It says "Can't get enough Christian fiction? Text 'fiction' to 41411 for a suggestion." Go ahead, you know you want to try it yourself. ;)
Well, I guess I'd better get ready for bed. I've got an early morning tomorrow with an author I find exceedingly interesting <Joel Rosenberg> speaking at 8am. Seriously...8am! How can they expect anyone to be awake and alert at that hour? Obviously the Christian Retail Show is a little different than the <name deleted to protect the innocent> Insurance conventions I used to help plan. Let's just say that the agents didn't show up at something that early without taking some sort of hangover concoction...
